Akeem Hemingway is a dedicated leader and advocate for youth development, currently serving as the Program Director for the Phoenix Renaissance Inc./Racepath after-school program. With over a decade of experience in community engagement, Akeem has consistently demonstrated his commitment to empowering young people and addressing educational disparities. His work is characterized by strategic leadership, innovative program development, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by underserved communities.
Akeem holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he developed a strong foundation in education and social sciences. This academic background, combined with his hands-on experience, has equipped him with the tools necessary to design and implement programs that make a tangible difference in the lives of children and their families.
Before joining Phoenix Renaissance Inc., Akeem served as the Director of Programs at the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand. In this role, he played a pivotal part in enhancing program participation, forging valuable community partnerships, and expanding the reach and impact of the organization. His leadership was instrumental in creating environments where young people could thrive, both academically and personally.

Karen Vassell, a native of Miami, Florida, has dedicated over 18 years to education. Her teaching career began in Alice Springs, Australia, where she taught Aboriginal students with moderate to severe disabilities using the Montessori method. Returning to the United States, she worked as a Preschool Autism Teacher for Prince William County Public Schools in Northern Virginia.
After relocating to South Carolina, Dr. Vassell served as an Elementary Teacher, School Counselor, Assistant Principal, Principal/Director of Early Learning Programs for Sumter School District, and Head Start Director for Horry, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties. She has also been an adjunct professor for Horry Georgetown Technical College, Grand Canyon University, and South Carolina State University. Additionally, she was a Graduate Research Assistant at South Carolina State University and a Director for the Talent Identification Program (TIP) at Duke University. Most recently, she served as CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand and is currently the Vice President of Community Relations for Phoenix Renaissance Inc.
Dr. Vassell has been involved with the SC Parent and Teacher Association, Horry County First Steps Board, and the Horry County Commission of Higher Education. She completed the 2020 Riley Institute of Diversity Leadership Initiative and the SC Education Policy Fellowship.
Dr. Vassell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Claflin University, a Master of Education in Elementary and Secondary Counselor Education, an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Administration, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. She also holds South Carolina Educator Certifications in early childhood, elementary, and secondary school counseling, principal, and superintendent. Her dissertation focused on the impact of teachers' perspectives on school climate and student outcomes in South Carolina.
Braylyn Bridges, a proud native of Columbia, South Carolina, has recently made Myrtle Beach his new home. As a graduate of Carolina Forest High School, Braylyn is currently furthering his education by pursuing an Associate of Arts degree at Horry Georgetown Technical College, reflecting his commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth.
With a deep-rooted passion for ministry, Braylyn has devoted over 15 years to serving as the Sound & Media Director at Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church. His expertise in media and technology has been a cornerstone of the church’s outreach, helping to enhance the worship experience and connect with a broader audience.
Beyond his ministry work, Braylyn has dedicated seven years to being the Social Media Specialist and Videographer for the Carolina Forest High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys Basketball Team. His skills in capturing and sharing the team’s journey have not only built a strong online presence but also fostered a sense of pride and community among students, parents, and supporters.
Braylyn’s advocacy extends to his active involvement in the Youth Ministry at Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church. As a strong advocate for youth, young adults, and his generation, he is deeply committed to guiding and empowering the next generation. His work focuses on creating opportunities and providing support to children and the community, driven by his belief in the power of faith, education, and mentorship.
In his professional career, Braylyn recently served as the Executive Assistant & Marketing Director at the Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand, where he played a key role in advancing the organization’s mission. Currently, he holds the position of Executive Assistant & Marketing Director at Phoenix Renaissance Inc., a role he sees as a divine calling, where he continues to make a significant impact.

It reflects his relentless pursuit of his goals and his dedication to inspiring others to reach for their dreams.
